Darius Morris Enters Draft, Won't Sign With Agent

Mar 29, 2011 1:37 PM

Michigan sophomore point guard Darius Morris will "test the waters" by entering his name in the NBA draft, according to his brother DeWayne Morris.

“He’s not going to hire an agent," DeWayne said. "He’s going to go through the process as if he was going to enter the draft.”

DeWayne also said Darius told Michigan coach John Beilein of his decision last week.

Morris led Michigan this year, averaging 15 points, 6.7 assists and four rebounds per game.

Michigan PG Darius Morris To Test Draft Waters Without Agent

Mar 26, 2011 9:05 PM

Michigan sophomore point guard Darius Morris will test the NBA Draft  experience by entering his name as an underclassman.

His brother DeWayne Morris Jr. said tonight that Darius will gauge his pro potential now that his sophomore season at U-M is concluded.

“He’s going to test the waters,” DeWayne said. “He’s not going to hire an agent. He’s going to go through the process as if he was going to enter the draft.”

The 6-foot-4 point guard averaged 18.5 points and 8.3 assists per 40 minutes pace adjusted as is projected as a late first to early second round pick.

Irving’s Return Helped Duke Matchup With Michigan

Mar 21, 2011 10:19 AM

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski adjusted his lineup to incorporate more guards that could protect the perimeter on defense as well as penetrate Michigan’s zone en route to a 73-71 victory.

Irving’s addition to the Duke rotation added more than his 11 points, nine of which came from free throws. It allowed Krzyzewski to play a four-guard lineup to help defend Michigan’s perimeter shooters.

“We wouldn’t be going forward if he didn’t play today,” Krzyzewski said. “That doesn’t take away from … anyone else, but you take one of those kids out of the equation and, you know, Michigan is going forward because they played winning basketball."

The freshman used his quickness superior athleticism to beat the Michigan guards off the dribble and then draw fouls in the lane.

“(Michigan) did a really good job against us, but they would have done a better job against us if we were real big," Krzyzewski said. "They can slice you up.”

Kyle Singler's Shooting Woes Continue To Hamper Duke

Mar 20, 2011 10:23 PM

Kyle Singler’s cold shooting remains a cause of concern for Duke.

Singler shot 5-of-12 against Michigan on Sunday as the Blue Devils narrowly escaped with a 73-71 win to advance to the Elite Eight.

Since February, Singler, a 6-8 forward, hasn’t been hitting his shots regularly.

Sunday was just Singler’s fourth game with an offensive rating above 100 (the D-I average) in the last month and his sixth since Feb. 2.

Singler hasn’t made more than one 3-pointer in a game since Feb. 13 and didn’t make any in six of those 12 games since. Unless he’s a threat from outside, defenders can slack off and collapse the middle, making it tougher for Duke to have dribble-penetration.

Michigan's Four-Guard Lineup Could Pose Problem For Duke

Mar 20, 2011 1:12 PM

The Blue Devils thrive off points off turnovers, turning opponents over to the tune of 15 times per game. The Blue Devils' pressure is the main reason, as they have recorded 7.5 steals per game.

"Defensively, of course, we want to set the tone and be a tough team," Smith said. "We've got to play our defense -- contest, pressure the ball -- and if we do those things against a very good Michigan team, we'll have a very good chance to win."

The Wolverines have a counter to that plan. Beilein started a four-guard lineup against Tennessee, using Zack Novak, Tim Hardaway Jr., Stu Douglass and Darius Morris along with 6-8 forward Jordan Morgan.

"It's difficult to shrink the width of the court against his team," Krzyzewski said. "And one of the things about playing good defense is if you can shrink a court, you make the court smaller based on adjustments, on personnel. Against his team, you have to play the entire half court, and so there's more room for error."

The Wolverines turn the ball over on just 16.7 percent of their offensive possessions -- 16th best in the nation.

LeBron: Fab Five Was Only Team I Wanted To Watch

Mar 18, 2011 12:47 PM

LeBron James recalls admiring Michigan's Fab Five.

“I was old enough, 8-9 years old,” James said. “That’s when I started playing basketball. That was the only team that really I wanted to watch. The swagger they brought to the game, the fun, knowing these guys were just right out of high school, 17-18 years old and were playing for a huge college and playing on the big level. To this day a lot of things we do as athletes come from those guys: the Fab Five. I don’t see any negative at all in what they did for the game.”

Grant Hill Responds To 'Fab Five'

Mar 16, 2011 7:41 PM

Grant Hill, who took some verbal abuse in the new ESPN documentary "The Fab Five", got some things off his chest in an essay posted by the New York Times.  In the documentary, Jalen Rose, the show's producer, stated that Duke recruited only black players he considered to be "Uncle Toms". Here are some of the highlights of Hill's reflections on Rose's comments:

"I am a fan, friend and longtime competitor of the Fab Five...It was a sad and somewhat pathetic turn of events, therefore, to see friends narrating this interesting documentary about their moment in time and calling me a bitch and worse, calling all black players at Duke “Uncle Toms” and, to some degree, disparaging my parents for their education, work ethic and commitment to each other and to me."

"My teammates at Duke — all of them, black and white — were a band of brothers who came together to play at the highest level for the best coach in basketball. I know most of the black players who preceded and followed me at Duke. They all contribute to our tradition of excellence on the court."

"To hint that those who grew up in a household with a mother and father are somehow less black than those who did not is beyond ridiculous."

"I am proud of my family. I am proud of my Duke championships and all my Duke teammates. And, I am proud I never lost a game against the Fab Five."

Bobby Hurley Fires Back At Fab Five

Mar 14, 2011 4:24 PM

In an interview with Dan Patrick, former Duke point guard Bobby Hurley responded to derogatory comments made by Jalen Rose and Jimmy King in their documentary, “The Fab Five,” which aired Sunday night on ESPN.

“I noticed there was a high level of bitterness there, particularly directed towards us,” Hurley said. “I wonder why? We were 3-0 against Michigan, so I can understand Jalen's frustrations.”

Rose said in the film he felt Duke didn't recruit black players like him, only those who were “Uncle Toms.” Patrick pointed out that Duke did recruit Chris Webber.

“We would've welcomed him with open arms,” Hurley said. “Jalen, on the other hand, I can understand why we didn't recruit him. He might have a tough time hitting the floor, because he wasn't taking my spot.”
